To Choose Joy

Come with your empty space.

This is not just an empty dish.

When there is an empty space in your life, remember that empty spaces draw us towards the only One who can truly fill us.

"My soul is cast down within me; therefore I remember you," (Psalm 42:6).

Therefore I remember you...

...I remember you because my soul is cast down...

This is not just an empty dish.

It was the vessel that held a beautiful blessing. Sometimes you just have to look back at what was in the empty dish...and it gives you strength to move forward.

This dish came the very day after I was so deeply humbled—when God showed me His kindness and His close attention to my own needs while I was so concerned about not being able to meet someone else’s needs.

When God reminded me that the lack in my life, the loss in my life, the empty space in my life, needs to draw me toward Him. Not towards what I think is supposed to fill me.

He is the One who fills.

"Why are you cast down, O my soul, and why are you in turmoil within me? Hope in God; for I shall again praise him, my salvation and my God," (Psalm 42:11).

This dish was filled with dinner from yet another dear friend. To spare me the time standing in the kitchen through pain and weakness. To remind me of God’s steadfast love for me. To keep me aware of His nearness. To assure me that He fills my empty cup. And to show me that He will fill the other cups I’m concerned about.

So, I will bring my empty spaces. I will trust that He will fill them in His own way, in His own time. And that His love will be more than enough for me.

Come with your empty space. Your empty cup. Your empty dish.

Bring your loss. Your lack. Your need.

Jesus will fill you.

"Taste and see that the Lord is good;
blessed is the one who takes refuge in him.
Fear the Lord, you his holy people,
for those who fear him lack nothing.
The lions may grow weak and hungry,
but those who seek the Lord lack no good thing,"
(Psalm 34:8-10).

What empty space are you bringing today?

And…thank you, sweet Jamie. Dinner was wonderful!
